Theatre alumna wins career achievement award

Department of Theatre alumna Caridad Svich recently received the 2018 Ellen Stewart Award for Career Achievement in Professional Theatre by the Association for Theatre in Higher Education (ATHE). The honor is given annually to recognize superlative contributions to the field of theatre. 

‘Spotlight 2018’ to feature alumni, student art

The UNC Charlotte Alumni Association’s inaugural alumni and student art exhibit “Spotlight 2018” runs from Thursday, June 28, through Thursday, July 12, at C3 Lab in South End. The exhibit is being curated by a panel of UNC Charlotte alumni.

Seven alumni named to Charlotte Mecklenburg Black Chamber of Commerce ‘30 Under 30’

Seven UNC Charlotte alumni were named recently to the Charlotte Mecklenburg Black Chamber of Commerce’s “30 Under 30.” They were recognized for their professional achievements, innovative contributions to their industries and their positive impact on the community during a reception at the Mint Museum. 

This year’s University alumni honorees were:

Architecture grad receives Emerging City Champions Fellowship

Amir Naeem, a recent graduate from the School of Architecture in the College of Arts + Architecture, has received a 2018 Emerging City Champions Fellowship from the Knight Foundation.

He will receive $5,000 for his proposal to place jukeboxes in public spaces along the CATS LYNX Blue Line. The jukeboxes will play music after users provide an idea or thought about the community. He developed his project concept while a student in Associate Professor Deb Ryan’s fifth-year architecture studio.

Former 49ers defensive back makes CFL debut with Toronto Argonauts

Anthony Covington, a former Charlotte 49ers defensive back, recently made his professional debut in the Canadian Football League with the Toronto Argonauts in the team’s first preseason game.
Covington, who had three tackles in the contest, played in 29 games in three seasons with the 49ers, making 15 starts. He is the 49ers all-time leader with 17 career pass breakups (PBU). He amassed 85 tackles in his career with two interceptions, a fumble recovery and a forced fumble. In addition to his role as a defensive back, Covington saw time as a kick returner.

Seniors Haley Pace and Bailey Rhoney have garnered Academic All-America honors from the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

Campus community says ‘Bon Voyage’ to Pride of Niner Nation Marching Band

On May 31, 137 members of the Pride of Niner Nation Marching Band departed from campus to begin a journey to Normandy, France, where they will be the first university band from North Carolina to represent the United States at an annual commemoration of the D-Day invasion.

Health programs alumnus earns elite AIDS Relief Fellowship

Joseph Konstanzer, a graduate of UNC Charlotte’s dual master’s program in public health and health informatics, has been named a public health fellow at Public Health Institute (PHI)/Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). He will work out of the Office of the U.S. Global AIDS Coordinator and Health Diplomacy.

Alumna receives prestigious Newcombe Fellowship

Alumna Amy Kennemore is one of 21 Charlotte Newcombe Doctoral Dissertation Fellows for 2018; this honor is presented by the Woodrow Wilson National Fellowship Foundation. 

Alumni Association to celebrate the life of Betty Stancil

The UNC Charlotte Alumni Association will celebrate the life of Betty Stancil from 4 to 6 p.m., Monday, Sept. 18, at the Harris Alumni Center at Johnson Glen. RSVPs requested by Friday, Sept. 15.
