Ogle receives 2014 First Citizens Bank Scholars Medal
Craig Ogle, the Charles H. Stone Professor of Chemistry, is the 2014 recipient of the First Citizens Bank Scholars Medal. The prestigious award, presented by First Citizens Bank and UNC Charlotte, honors faculty scholarship and intellectual inquiry.
UNC Charlotte to hold fall commencement ceremonies Dec. 14
Commencement brings to mind the culmination of one’s academic journey—it also marks a beginning. It is the start of that next chapter, either undertaking advanced studies or entering the workforce. In either case, it is a cause for celebration.
Approximately 3,400 students, along with their families, friends and others, will gather for fall 2013 commencement ceremonies on Saturday, Dec. 14, in Halton Arena, located in the Barnhardt Student Activity Center.
UNC Charlotte receives Belk Innovation in Diversity Award
UNC Charlotte is the first nonprofit recipient of the Belk Innovation in Diversity Award, presented by the Charlotte Chamber and Belk Inc. The University was acknowledged at the chamber’s annual meeting Tuesday, Dec. 3.
The Belk Innovation in Diversity Award recognizes “outstanding leadership and practice by driving business and community results through innovative diversity and inclusion in the workplace, economy and beyond.”
ACCEHW to offer lunch-and-learn program
“Work Life Balance” is the topic of a lunch-and-learn program scheduled for noon, Wednesday, Dec. 4, in the Student Union, Room 200.
Online RSVPs are requested; faculty and staff members are encouraged to bring their lunch to enjoy during the program, sponsored by the Advisory Committee to the Chancellor for Employee Health and Wellness (ACCEHW).
University celebrates Giving Green Campaign success
UNC Charlotte faculty, staff and administrators gathered in the Barnhardt Student Activity Center Salons Nov. 14 to celebrate the successful culmination of the 2013 Giving Green Campaign.
Co-chairs Joël Gallegos and Misty Hathcock made the “big reveal” as Chancellor Philip Dubois announced the campaign total of $154,609. This figure, which combines gifts to the ASC, SECC and the UNC Foundation, topped last year’s effort.
Robinson Hall location for Faculty/Staff Social
Faculty and staff members are invited to join colleagues for socializing and networking at a Faculty and Staff Social, which will be from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m., Tuesday, Nov. 19, in the lobby of the Robinson Hall for the Performing Arts.
Sponsored by Chancellor Philip L. Dubois, the social will feature light hors d’oeuvres, wine, beer and soft drinks.
First Urban Scholarship recipient named at CONE-vocation
Junior Kendyl Messer is the inaugural recipient of the Daisy Pearl Pugh Urban Scholarship. The honor was presented during Tuesday’s CONE-vocation in the Cone University Center Lucas Room.
Rob Urban, the son of the scholarship’s namesake, announced the recipient, who is a nursing major and student employee. A Charlotte native, Messer is a building manager for the Cone Center. She noted that during her two years as a student worker, she has learned the importance of building relationships, and she said she values the leadership experience her job affords.
Employee dies at construction site across from campus
A construction worker was electrocuted Monday afternoon and died as a result of those injuries, according to a report by WCNC.
The story said emergency crews responded to the scene in the 9200 block of Sandburg Avenue around 2 p.m.; this is the location of the apartment complex being built across from the University’s main entrance.
Winners of Fall Festival contests named
The Staff Council Fall Festival drew a large crowd to the Barnhardt Student Activity Center Tuesday, where attendees enjoyed free food, music, games and other activities.
As part of this annual tradition, the council sponsors baking and photography contests and a scavenger hunt.
Jackie Thompson, student financial aid, took top honors in the bake-off for her lemon pound cake; Erin Stehmeyer, kinesiology, took second for her “Peachy Upside Down Cake.”

On the Oct. 8 edition of “The Live Wire,” Dave Broome, vice chancellor for legal affairs and general counsel, talked about the recent state law that allows conceal-carry guns on college campuses and how University policy was revised accordingly.
