New biomedical, biotechnology graduate certificates add exciting choices
For individuals whose goals include biomedical school or in a career focused on innovative technologies in the life sciences, UNC Charlotte has added two new graduate certificates to help.The Department of Biological Sciences in the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences has developed graduate certificates in biomedical sciences and in biotechnology, in response to student and societal needs.

Center for Graduate Life receives $50,000 training grant
The Center for Graduate Life (CGL) is among the recipients of a Career Guidance for Trainees grant from Burroughs Wellcome Fund.Jill Huerta, CGL executive director, and Aura Young, assistant director of professional development and doctoral support, received the grant to launch a STEM Communication Fellowship Program within the center.
Graduate School recognizes top teaching assistants
Nitika, a doctoral student in Biological Sciences, and Caroline Brinegar, a master’s student in Geography, were designated UNC Charlotte’s Outstanding Graduate Teaching Assistants (TA) for 2020. The pair, who were recognized remotely due to the University’s effort to fight the coronavirus pandemic, were awarded $1,000 and a plaque.
Graduate student receives international honor
Krystal Turner ’14,’19 M.A. recently was named Outstanding Entry-Level Student by the Chi Sigma Iota (CSI) Counseling Academic and Professional Honor Society International. The society promotes scholarship, research, professionalism, leadership, advocacy and excellence in counseling.

For decades, the color blue has been a significant focus of research into improvements in digital display technology. The images seen on laptops, phones and flat-screen TVs come from light-emitting materials comprising three colors: red, green and blue.
Condensing research for a three-minute pitch
During the annual Three Minute Thesis (3MT) competition, graduate students have to summarize extensive and complex research or scholarship into a brief, compelling presentation that anyone can understand—in three minutes.This year’s event will be at 4 p.m., Friday, Nov. 15, in Atkins Library, Halton Reading Room. Attendees will be able to vote for their favorite presenters alongside the panel of judges.

UNC Charlotte’s Graduate School is offering a new certificate program aimed at helping recent undergraduate students, graduate students and young professionals to polish their workplace skills.
