Nominations sought for de Silva Award

The Graduate School is seeking nominations for the 2020 Harshini V. de Silva Graduate Mentor Award.  Recognizing the full-time member of the graduate faculty who demonstrates outstanding graduate mentoring, nominations should come from a chair of the academic department.  

Graduate School to hold recruitment fair

The UNC Charlotte Graduate School will hold a recruitment fair from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 10, in the Barnhardt Student Activity Center Salons.Prospective students will be able to explore the University’s 150-plus graduate programs and speak informally with graduate program directors, professors, admissions counselors and financial aid/funding representatives.RSVPs requested.

Education professor receives first Reynolds Leadership Award

Florence Martin is the inaugural recipient of the Thomas L. Reynolds Leadership Award for excellence in graduate program administration.She is a professor in Learning, Design and Technology, graduate program director of the Post-Master’s Certificate of University and College Teaching and program coordinator of the Ed.D. in Educational Leadership, Learning, Design and Technology.

Nominations sought for 2020 First Citizens Bank Scholars Medal

The Graduate School is seeking nominations for the 2020 First Citizens Bank Scholars Medal. This honor, awarded since 1988, recognizes outstanding scholarship, creativity and/or research among senior full-time faculty members. Nominations may come from any UNC Charlotte faculty member. 

Webinar to feature ‘The Professor is In’

The Center for Graduate Life is sponsoring “Hacking the Academic Job Market.” This one-hour webinar, followed by a question-and-answer period, is scheduled for 2:30 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 19, in the Cone University Center, Room 268.Karen Kelsky, of the acclaimed The Professor Is In website, will lead this webinar, which is open to all graduate and postdoctoral students, as part of the University’s observance of National Postdoc Appreciation Week.

How institutions can create inclusive communities among graduate students was the theme of a recent professional development conference co-hosted by UNC Charlotte’s Graduate School.

Dean’s microscope collection on display

Tom Reynolds’ early childhood fascination in microscopy turned into a collection of antique and vintage microscopes, which are on display in the J. Murrey Atkins Library.

Reynolds, associate provost and dean of the Graduate School, amassed nearly 150 microscopes and accessories during the past 30 years. They primarily represent those from the 19th-century English genre.

Reynolds Fellowship recipients named

Eight students who represent a number of educational disciplines are this year’s recipients of the Thomas L. Reynolds Graduate Student Research Award.

The Reynolds Fellowship was created by its namesake, Associate Provost and Graduate School Dean Tom Reynolds, to assist with costs that are overlooked in other funding sources and to help students stay focused on their research goals. The Reynolds Fellowship provides up to $1,500 to doctoral students who have completed three semesters and to master’s students who have completed at least one semester.
