Annual 49er Gold Rush 5K Run/Walk scheduled

Registration is open for the 49er Gold Rush 5K, presented by Novant Health and the UNC Charlotte Recreational Services Department. This event is set for 9 a.m., Saturday, Feb. 6, at Irwin Belk Track and Field Complex.

Race day check-in, packet pickup and registration will be 7:30 to 8:30 a.m. at the track level. Net proceeds from the 5K will benefit UNC Charlotte student development scholarships; direct donations will be accepted for Girls on the Run, a Charlotte-based nonprofit that uses running to inspire young girls.

Sports club participants win inaugural statewide canned food competition

UNC Charlotte’s Sport Clubs program was the overall winner of the inaugural First in Flight Fight Against Hunger, a statewide canned food drive competition.

For this food drive, 898 student-athletes from campus collected 2,200 pounds of canned food. Approximately 7,150 pounds of canned food were collected by the 11 collegiate sport clubs programs that participated.

Town-hall meeting on diversity and inclusion scheduled

UNC Charlotte officials will participate in a town-hall style discussion about diversity and inclusion on campus at 7 p.m., Monday, Jan. 25, in the Cone University Center, McKnight Hall.

Student Body President Mitch Daratony will moderate this meeting that will include Chancellor Philip L. Dubois, Provost Joan Lorden, Vice Chancellor for Business Affairs Beth Hardin and Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs Art Jackson.

‘Spectacular’ Belk Gym lauded at re-opening celebration

A bigger, better Belk Gym was on display Monday as campus leaders, students, faculty and staff celebrated the re-opening of a facility built in 1970.

Seventh annual ‘49ers4Life’ blood drive set for Jan. 26

UNC Charlotte students, faculty and staff again will have the chance to team with the American Red Cross in a campus-wide effort to save lives. This year’s 49ers4Life blood drive, set for 8 a.m. to 7 p.m., Tuesday, Jan. 26, in the Barnhardt Student Activity Center, has a collection goal of 1,000 pints.

HRL housekeeping team achieves top ISSA re-certification

For the third time since 2011, the housekeeping staff of the Housing and Residence Life Department is re-certified to Cleaning Industry Management Standards (CIMS) and CIMS-Green Buildings with honors by the International Sanitary Supply Association, a leading worldwide organization.

CIMS standards assess an entire organization and focus on its management systems and processes used to deliver services to clients, according to the ISSA website.

Food drive supports Niner Student Pantry

Participants in the Sports Clubs program conducted a food drive to benefit the Niner Student Pantry; volunteers recently delivered 2,200 pounds of canned food to the organization.

The University’s Sport Clubs program provides students, faculty and staff with the opportunity to participate in a variety of competitive, instructional and recreational sports. A sport club is a registered student organization formed by individuals with a common interest in a particular sport or recreational activity. They are student-initiated and student-managed.
