University employees, students attend energy summit
UNC Charlotte staff, faculty and students recently participated in the seventh annual Appalachian Energy Summit, hosted by Appalachian State University. The summit is a gathering of energy and sustainability leaders from higher education and other industries to exchange ideas for improving campus performance in energy, buildings, waste, transport, buildings and curriculum.

Softball earns Conference USA Sport Academic Award for fourth straight season
The Charlotte 49ers softball team once again has claimed the Conference USA Softball Academic Award. This honor is given to the team in each conference-sponsored sport with the highest GPA for the academic year.
With claiming the award for the 2017-18 season, the University’s softball team has won the honor for the fourth consecutive academic year.
During the academic year, the 49ers softball team compiled a 3.649 cumulative grade point average with nine of the 18 players on the roster achieving a perfect 4.0 in the spring semester.

Senior linebacker recognized for community service, named to Wuerffel trophy watch list
Charlotte 49ers senior linebacker Juwan Foggie has been nominated for the 2018 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team and named to the Wuerffel Trophy Watch List.
The Allstate AFCA Good Works Team is comprised of college football student-athletes and one honorary head coach who make outstanding contributions in the areas of volunteerism and civic involvement. These individuals embody the true spirit of teamwork and giving back through commendable acts of kindness.

‘Engage ME’ helping multicultural engineers succeed
Engage ME, which stands for Engage Multicultural Engineers, is a relatively new initiative within the Lee College of Engineering; the effort brings together students, faculty, professionals and alumni of all races, cultures and genders.

Engineering students to compete in national concrete canoe contest
A team of Lee College of Engineering students will join competitors from around the world at the 31st annual National Concrete Canoe Competition, being held June 23-25 at San Diego State University.

Rugby players earn All American honors
Four members of UNC Charlotte’s 2018 national championship Men’s Rugby Club team recently were named honorary Men’s Collegiate All Americans Sevens recipients.

Campus community says ‘Bon Voyage’ to Pride of Niner Nation Marching Band
On May 31, 137 members of the Pride of Niner Nation Marching Band departed from campus to begin a journey to Normandy, France, where they will be the first university band from North Carolina to represent the United States at an annual commemoration of the D-Day invasion.

Engineering team places third at NASA Robotic Mining Competition
The UNC Charlotte Astrobotics Robotic Team, the 49er Miners, recently finished third in the Caterpillar Autonomy Award at the 2018 NASA Robotic Mining Competition at Kennedy Space Center. The team joined an elite group of few schools in the history of the competition to accomplish a fully autonomous mining run (approximately 50 colleges and universities have competed each year for the past nine years).

The business side of racing: Alums seek success on the track
Two UNC Charlotte alums are racing in NASCAR’s Xfinity Series and competed in Saturday’s Alsco 300 at Charlotte Motor Speedway.

Men’s Rugby Club team wins national championship
UNC Charlotte’s 2018 Men’s Rugby Club team recently won the national championship for the Men’s Division 2 College 7s in Glendale, Colorado.
