Portrait and storytelling project to celebrate UNC Charlotte community

Dear World is an internationally renowned portrait and storytelling project that has been featured on NBC, USA Today, CNN and Buzzfeed. Representatives from the project will present a live show at 7 p.m., Thursday, March 15, in the Cone University Center, McKnight Hall.

Code of Student Responsibility policy revised

University Policy 406, The Code of Student Responsibility, was revised to account for recent changes in the U.S. Department of Education Office for Civil Rights (OCR) guidance regarding Title IX cases.

Engineering student, professor win best paper

Doctoral student Wahida Nasrin and Associate Professor Jiang (Linda) Xie, both from the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department, won a Best Paper Award from the IEEE Global Communications Conference (Globecom), held in Singapore. Their winning paper was titled “An Efficient Target Cell Selection Scheme for Next-generation Open-access Femtocell Networks.”

DACA event to offer information, legal consultation

Immigrant Justice Program attorneys with the Charlotte Center for Legal Advocacy will host a Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) information session and legal Q&A for DACA recipients, educators and allies on Thursday, Oct. 26. 

At 6 p.m., there will be an information session to discuss the recent movement to end DACA; an individual, general legal Q&A will be at 7 p.m. Both will be in the Popp Martin Student Union Movie Theater.  

Applications being accepted for student social justice institute

Activate! is a semester-long leadership series focused on social justice, equity and activism offered by the Multicultural Resource Center. The program is accepting applicants for the spring 2018 semester. Undergraduate students must apply by 5 p.m., Friday, Dec. 1. This cohort will meet at 2:30 p.m., Thursdays, during the spring semester.

Comedian Hasan Minhaj to visit campus

Comedian, actor and writer Hasan Minhaj will speak at 7 p.m., Wednesday, Nov. 8, in the Popp Martin Student Union, Room 340. He will give his humorous observations of political and current events.

Minhaj is a senior correspondent on the Emmy and Peabody award-winning program “The Daily Show with Trevor Noah” on Comedy Central. As the host of the White House Correspondent’s Dinner this year, Minhaj described the comedy routine was “an immigrant’s love letter to America.”

Inclusivity is theme for employer showcase and mixer

The Multicultural Resource Center and University Career Center will co-host an “Inclusivity Employer Showcase and Mixer” on Thursday, Oct. 26, for UNC Charlotte students.

This two-part event will begin at 11 a.m. at the Popp Martin Student Union Rotunda. Students will have the chance to speak with 12 employers whose organizations have a focus on inclusivity. Company representatives will discuss their work as students learn about jobs and internships available in the Charlotte area.

Be a commencement speaker, bell ringer

The Dean of Students Office is seeking two student speakers and two bell ringers for UNC Charlotte’s December commencement ceremonies. Faculty and staff are requested to encourage students graduating in December to apply for one of these prestigious honors.
