Harris named Google Cloud Academic all-America
Charlotte 49ers senior first baseman Meredith Harris was named to the 2019 Google Cloud Academic All-America Division I Softball Second Team, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America.
The Google Cloud Academic All-America Softball Team celebrates the nation’s top players for their efforts on the field and in the classroom.
Speech team places in national tournament
For the first time ever, UNC Charlotte’s speech team has placed in the top 20 in a national speech tournament, competing against more than 150 teams from across the nation in the National Forensic Association’s championship tournament held in Santa Ana, California.
University Recreation Center slated for mid-fall opening
The University Recreation Center, scheduled to open during the upcoming fall semester, will respond to UNC Charlotte’s growing demand for dedicated student recreation and fitness space.

The results are in, and UNC Charlotte’s 49er Rocketry Team achieved major success at this year’s NASA Student Launch Competition.
Engineering students place first in concrete competition
A team of Construction Management and Civil Engineering Technology students from UNC Charlotte placed first in the 2019 ACI/ASCC Concrete Construction Competition, an international contest sponsored by the American Concrete Institute (ACI) and the American Society of Concrete Contractors (ASCC).
Team members were Ross Newsome, Benjamin Hager, George Poulos, Kenny Wang and Joseph Ocampo. Assistant Professor Tara Cavalline was the team’s mentor.
Students help design Levine Museum exhibition
Students in the architectural history class “Museums: Southeast + Beyond” have worked this semester with the Levine Museum of the New South to design and install the exhibition, “The Legacy of Lynching.”
Coming to Charlotte from the Equal Justice Initiative in Montgomery, Alabama, the exhibition will open on Wednesday, April 24, and will be displayed through Monday, June 17.
Study Abroad Photo Exhibit to celebrate 10th anniversary
The 10th annual Study Abroad Photo Exhibit will be displayed in the Popp Martin Student Union Gallery from Tuesday, April 30, through Friday, May 24. An opening reception celebrating the 10th anniversary of the exhibit will be from 4 to 6 p.m. on Wednesday, May 1.
AV technician named Student Employee of the Year
“I am on my way” is what one will hear from Spence Guffey when he responds to a request for technical assistance in the Cone University Center or Popp Martin Student Union.
Guffey, a computer science major and sociology minor, is the 2019 Student Employee of the Year. He has served in a variety of technical positions since November 2016.
TIAA donates food and supplies to UNC Charlotte
UNC Charlotte’s Jamil Niner Student Pantry recently received 1,200 pounds of food and supplies as part of TIAA’s annual employee food drive. The student pantry assists UNC Charlotte undergraduate and graduate students in need, offering a variety of nutritious meals and food staples to help ensure their continued success.
Take back the night
Brittany Piper is the keynote speaker for UNC Charlotte’s annual “Take Back the Night” event, which will start at 6 p.m., Thursday, April 11, in the Cone University Center, McKnight Hall.
