International Festival to be featured on public TV
Tune into the Sept. 19 edition of “North Carolina Now” to view a segment that features UNC Charlotte staff members and others discussing the Queen City’s diverse cultural landscape and growing internationalization. The show airs at 7:30 p.m. on UNC-TV (Channel 13).

Modest graduate marketing campaign yields major results
During the summer, the Graduate School and the Office of University Communications partnered to initiate a limited marketing campaign to drive awareness of graduate certificate offerings and to boost enrollment in the programs.
University leaders were impressed with the results.
Web-based ads and retargeting, a form of advertising technology that “follows” an audience, were the primary tactics used in the campaign to promote awareness of UNC Charlotte’s graduate certificate programs.

Chancellor speaks about economic development in Union County
Chancellor Philip L. Dubois was the keynote speaker at the 16th annual Hook and Slice Industry Appreciation Banquet presented by Monroe-Union County Economic Development on Thursday, Sept. 4. In his remarks to an audience of about 100 industry leaders in Union County, Dubois emphasized UNC Charlotte’s shared goals of economic prosperity and other connections with Union County. He met a number of local elected officials including Monroe Mayor Bobby Kilgore, industry leaders and many alumni who are making a difference in Union County.

University friend Carol Belk dies
Longtime UNC Charlotte friend Carol Grotnes Belk, the wife of UNC Charlotte benefactor Irwin “Ike” Belk, died Aug. 25 at The Cypress.
Born in Park Ridge, Ill., Carol Belk was a founding trustee to Charlotte Latin School and served on the board of Discovery Place. She and Ike Belk were married almost 66 years, and Carol is survived by her husband and their sons and daughters William Irwin Belk (Georgia), Irene Belk Miltimore (Dean), Marilyn Belk Wallis (Edward) and Carl Grotnes Belk (Beth).
Charlotte’s North Tryon Street visioning process begins, University joins community partners to boost Uptown district
The process to create a vision plan focused on the redevelopment of the North Tryon Street area in Uptown Charlotte will begin this week.

Giving Green and School Tools – annual drive set for Aug. 1-15
UNC Charlotte is joining with Classroom Central, Communities in Schools and WSOC-TV for the 18th annual School Tools Campaign.
School Tools is a drive to collect and distribute school supplies to children who need them. All supplies collected will be distributed through Classroom Central, a free store for teachers and Communities in Schools site coordinators.
Classroom Central gives area teachers an opportunity to shop for donated school supplies for their students, many of them live in poverty and would start the school year unequipped otherwise.

New marketing campaign aimed at increasing graduate students
Graduate certificate programs can provide individuals with an important educational credential in a focused area of study, and the University is seeking to increase program visibility through a new mini-marketing campaign.
“A graduate or post-master’s certificate enables individuals to obtain specialized training in a particular academic or occupational area that can help advance their careers,” said Karla Stanchina, manager of communications for the Graduate School.

Doster, Wartham among area’s most influential women
Betty Doster and Amy Wartham recently were named to the list of 50 Most Influential Women by the Mecklenburg Times. The publication solicited nominees from the community, and an independent panel of judges selected the final honorees.
Doster is special assistant to the chancellor for constituent relations, and Wartham is director of corporate training in the Office of Continuing Education. This is the second time that Wartham was chosen for inclusion to the list.

Second quarter edition of UNC Charlotte magazine online
A quarterly publication, UNC Charlotte magazine features stories of interest to alumni, faculty, staff, students and friends of the University.

Albert Scholarship seeks to develop engineering leaders
Investing in future engineering leaders is the goal of a new merit-based scholars program, made possible by the family of Craig and Darla Albert.
The Albert Engineering Leadership Scholars Program will emphasize applied learning, campus involvement and professional development.
