EPIC to host ‘Discover Engineering Day’

Designed to showcase the field, “Discover Engineering Day” will feature a talk from a NASA expert, tour of EPIC energy labs and the motorsports engineering facility, faculty research displays and more on Saturday, Feb. 20.

Tim Ezell, chief of NASA Systems Development, Integration and Test Division, will speak, and participants will learn more about the Charlotte Engineering Early College, a Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools facility located near EPIC.

Diversity and inclusion advocate to deliver annual Levine Lecture

Thomas Negri, a long-time advocate of diversity, inclusiveness and opportunity for immigrants and refugees, will deliver UNC Charlotte’s annual Levine Lecture at 6 p.m., Wednesday, March 2, at the Levine Museum of the New South.

Campus to return to normal operations at 5 p.m. Feb. 15

Effective at 5 p.m., Monday, Feb. 15, UNC Charlotte will return to normal operations, Operating Status No. 1. Classes that begin at 5 p.m. or later tonight (Feb. 15) will be held.

Students, faculty and staff should use judgment about the appropriate course of action in individual circumstances as weather impacts may vary across the UNC Charlotte service region.  In all cases, allow more time for travel and exercise caution.  

PPS chief elected vice president of state association

Jeff Baker, chief of the University’s Police and Public Safety Department, was elected vice president of the N.C. Association of Campus Law Enforcement Administrators (NCACLEA).

According to the association, NCACLEA works to promote professional ideals and standards for campus law enforcement in order to better serve the needs of higher education in North Carolina. In addition, the association provides professional development opportunities for its members and represents campus law enforcement agencies.

Campus open on reduced schedule, Monday, Feb. 15

UNC Charlotte is operating on a reduced schedule, Operating Status No. 2, on Monday, Feb. 15. Offices and facilities are open but classes are canceled until 5 p.m. Essential personnel are required to report for work. Students, faculty and staff should use their own best judgment and exercise caution in traveling to and from campus, given their individual circumstances.

University monitoring weather conditions

The University is closely monitoring Charlotte area weather. As of 9:45 p.m., Feb. 14, there are no changes to the normal operating schedule for Monday, Feb. 15. An update will be provided by 6 a.m. on Monday.

Faculty and staff taking advantage of Dropbox for Education

Since Friday’s announcement regarding the availability of Dropbox for Education, hundreds of faculty and staff members have taken advantage of this “free, secure, unlimited file storage with access anywhere, anytime.”

Donna Lanclos, associate professor for anthropological research, is among them. “I already use Dropbox and have for years,” said Lanclos. “It’s one of the most convenient ways to have access to my documents.”

Religious studies professor to address the rise of ISIS

As part of the 2016 Great Decisions Lecture Series, Kathryn Johnson, an associate professor in the Department of Religious Studies, will discuss the rise of ISIS at 6:30 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 17, at UNC Charlotte Center City.

Johnson, who joined the University faculty in 1988, teaches courses in Islamic studies.
