Tracy Dawkins’ spicy chili topped the field in the 2015 Staff Council Chili/Chowder Cook-off held recently in the Cone University Center.

First-year writing students honored
UNC Charlotte students were recognized recently for their writing achievement as part of the University Writing Program’s Excellence in First-Year Writing ceremony in the Atkins Library, Halton Reading Room.

On Monday, May 25, Google Calendar will launch; Google Email will follow in phases during the summer.

College honors faculty with 2015 teaching awards
Janna Shedd, Tonya Bates and Robin James have received the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences’ 2015 Teaching Awards in recognition of “their dedication, teaching and research contributions and lasting impact on students.”

CLAS adding associate dean for academic affairs and diversity
The College of Liberal Arts & Sciences will add the position of associate dean for academic affairs and diversity to the Dean’s Office in 2015-16. Shawn Long, currently chair of the Department of Communication Studies, will assume this role effective July 1.

Faces – Solomon Franklin
Solomon Franklin is enthusiastic about making a difference, not only at UNC Charlotte but in the greater community.
A member of the 100 Black Men of Greater Charlotte Inc., Franklin mentors two young men, one in middle school, the other is in high school. He also is on the organization’s board of directors as chief operating officer.

‘Day of Convocation’ segment to be rebroadcast
“The Live Wire” segment featuring Kim Buch, professor of psychology, and Steven Serio, former student body president, will be rebroadcast on Thursday, April 30. They discussed the inaugural “Day of Convocation,” which will be held Aug. 24.
“The Live Wire” can be viewed on computers or mobile devices starting at 2 p.m.

Retiring faculty recognized at annual reception
University leaders, along with the family and friends of retiring faculty, recently gathered for an annual reception to honor 14 faculty members whose combined service to the University totaled more than 340 years of service.
Chancellor Philip L. Dubois, who hosted the event at the Harris Alumni Center, noted that the retiring faculty members were among those who helped UNC Charlotte become the state’s urban research university; he encouraged them to continue to remain involved in the institution they helped build.

Broome honored by N.C. Bar Association
David Broome, UNC Charlotte vice chancellor and general counsel, has received the Ann L. Majestic Distinguished Service Award, given by the N.C. Bar Association’s Education Law Section. He was presented the honor during a ceremony Friday, April 24, in Cary.

Charlotte 49ers Coaches Caravan to roll out
Fans of the Charlotte 49ers will have several opportunities to meet coaches Brad Lambert, Mark Price and Cara Consuegra during the 2015 49ers Coaches Caravan.
Stops are scheduled in Raleigh on Thursday, April 30; Hendrick Motorsports in Concord on Thursday, May 14; and DB’s Tavern in the Ballantyne area on Wednesday, May 20.
