UNC Charlotte junior honored for community service
Junior Angelica Rose Brown has been recognized for outstanding leadership and service by North Carolina Campus Compact, a statewide network of colleges and universities with a shared commitment to community engagement. She is a recipient of the network’s Community Impact Award honoring one student leader at each member school.
Niner Student Pantry moves to new campus location

Students learn about poverty, language issues through simulation
Sixty UNC Charlotte students who are enrolled in Spanish language classes caught a glimpse of what it means to live in poverty in a foreign country, struggling to survive with limited language skills.
During the poverty simulation, conducted in partnership with Crisis Assistance Ministry, the students were organized into “family” groups of three to six people with specific background stories and roles. They could only speak Spanish during the simulation and had to complete tasks while overcoming obstacles.

Graduate School continues veteran student assistantships
For the second year, UNC Charlotte’s Graduate School is seeking military veterans to apply for graduate assistantships designated exclusively for veteran students. Three two-year assistantships are being offered for veteran students starting graduate studies in fall 2016. Each assistantship is valued at $36,000 to $45,000 and includes full tuition, health insurance and an assistantship stipend.

Belk College professor to guest on Nov. 6 ‘Live Wire’
Gary Kohut, director of the MBA program in the Belk College of Business, will be a guest on the Nov. 6 edition of “The Live Wire,” Inside UNC Charlotte’s streaming webcast. Starting at noon, he will discuss what makes UNC Charlotte’s MBA the choice for Charlotte professionals.

Faculty and Friends Concert to honor composer Walter Hartley
The Department of Music Faculty and Friends Concert Series will honor composer Walter Hartley on Tuesday, Nov. 17. Hartley, whose daughter Carol Hartley is a business services coordinator in the Department of Languages and Culture Studies, has composed nearly 300 works and is most revered for his music for saxophones, brass instruments and wind ensembles. The concert will be at 7:30 p.m. in Rowe Recital Hall.

Faculty/Staff Nights open Charlotte 49ers basketball seasons
Employees can kick off the season with four free admission tickets to games as the Charlotte 49ers open the Mark Price era of men’s basketball. Games included in this deal are the men’s exhibition match at 7 p.m., Monday, Nov. 9, and the Opening Day Doubleheader on Friday, Nov. 13, when the women face Ball State at 5:30 p.m. and the men take on Elon at 8:30 p.m. The first 2,500 fans in attendance on Opening Day will receive a commemorative Mark Price jersey T-shirt.

University advancement member wins Homecoming decorating contest
As part of this year’s Homecoming festivities, the Staff Council teamed with the Student Government Association to sponsor a Homecoming Office Decorating Contest. Natalie Cornell, UNC Charlotte alumna Class of 2014 and a staff member in the Events and Special Projects Department of the Division for University Advancement, was named the winner.

Retire date for 49er Express now Nov. 12
My UNC Charlotte (my.charlotte.edu) successfully launched in early October and will replace 49er Express. On Nov. 12, at approximately 5:30 a.m., 49er Express will fully retire, and My UNC Charlotte will serve as the main portal. The original retire date, Nov. 16, was moved up as some functionalities are ending sooner than anticipated.
